FAQ
Is it possible to open my own woodworking shop?
Starting your own woodworking business isn't easy. You will need to adhere to many legal requirements. This doesn't necessarily mean that you should go through all the work of setting up a company. Many people opt to join existing businesses instead. This will allow you to avoid paying membership fees and taxes.
Can I make my living doing this job?
Yes! In fact, many woodworkers already do. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for woodworkers was $34,000 in May 2012. This is more than the national average of 31,000 per annum.
How do you know which tools are the best for you?
It's important that you consider your needs and preferences while shopping for tools. Do you prefer metal handles or plastic? What size screws or nails do you prefer? Are you more comfortable using power tools than hand tools?
What is the difference between a hobbyist woodworker and a professional woodworker.
Hobbyists love making things from wood while professionals are more concerned with the quality of their work. Hobbyists take great pride in their creations, and share them with family and friends. Professionals will spend hours looking at designs before they start to build a project. They'll pay great attention to details, from choosing the most suitable materials to finishing the work perfectly.
What is the main difference between plywood or particle board?
Plywood is made up of layers of wood pressed together under pressure. Plywood can come in many thicknesses and is used for flooring and cabinets. Particle board consists of sawdust mixed and resin. The resin is then compressed into large blocks. It's often used for home renovation projects. Both types of boards can be easily cut and are durable.

- Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)
- If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)

How To
How do you measure wood accurately?
We use several methods to measure wood. We use a digital caliper (a tool used to measure distances), a laser level (used to make sure your work surface is flat), and a bubble level (used to make sure your work surface is perpendicular).
Two jaws can be opened and closed on a digital caliper. One jaw holds the measured object while the other measures the distance between the two points. The digital calculator is ideal for measuring very small distances, like the thicknesses or wood.
Laser levels use an infrared beam of light to project a line across the ground. The laser emits a red dot on the line. If you look down on the line, it will show whether the surface appears even or not. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.
Bubble levels look similar to a compass. There is a bubble at the center of this device. As long as the bubble is centered, the device will tell you whether the surface is level or not. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
