Smoothing plane

A smoothing plane is a great tool for woodworking. However, there are some jobs that are better suited to a hand-held plane. A smooth, well-tuned smoothing tool will create a smooth, shiny surface. For this type of plane to work effectively, it is important that you have a solid body position with a constant downward pressure. There are many smoothing planes available, but it is possible to start with a simple metal plane if this is your first time.

Combination plane

The Lee Valley Veritas Combination Plane is a modern interpretation of the Stanley #45 combination plane, which was produced between 1884 and 1962. This hand plane was advertised as having seven functions: beading, plowing groove, creating dado or rebate housing, and even planed the sash of a window. The Veritas is an acceptable alternative to both planes.

Jack plane

The simplest ways you can use a jackplan will work for you, regardless of whether you are a professional woodworker or an amateur. Two irons can be used together to make a jackplan. One is used for smoothing out large, narrow sections of wood. Each iron has its own unique shape. One iron is used to remove the thickest pieces of wood. An additional iron smoothes the surface. It is also used to loosen edges.

Block plane with adjustable mouth and low angle

A low-angle adjustable, mouth block plane is similar the #60 Stanley but doesn't have a fully adjustable nose. It comes with a turned rosewood knob. The #60 comes with a turned rosewood front knob. This is different from the #9 1/4 model. A Stanley block plane of high quality will last a lifetime but it is not very valuable.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. We'll use the "pocket hole joint," which means we drill holes in the wood and then glue them together. This works well if the wood is straight and smooth. Dowel joinery might be a better option if your wood is not straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. First, measure the area where you wish to place the pocket joint. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will help ensure that the joint won't split later.
  3. Glue Together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes before you attach the pieces.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried completely, you can clamp the pieces together until they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
